A brand can be beautiful and still not feel like you.
You can have the logo you once loved, a colour palette that looks good together, a collection of fonts saved in a folder and a website that technically does everything it needs to do. And yet, something still feels slightly off.
Perhaps your business has changed since you created your branding. Perhaps you have become clearer about what you do, who you want to work with and what matters to you. Or perhaps you simply look at your brand and think, this is nice, but I don’t think it really sounds like me anymore.
I think this is more common than we realise.
Creating a brand identity that feels like you is not about finding the perfect font or choosing a colour palette that happens to be beautiful. It begins much earlier than that. It begins with understanding.
001 | START WITH WHO YOU ARE, NOT WHAT IS TRENDING.
It is easy to begin with the visual side of branding. You save a few websites, create a Pinterest board and notice that everyone seems to be using the same soft neutrals, serif fonts and beautiful editorial photography. Before long, you have a moodboard full of things you love.
And there is nothing wrong with inspiration. But inspiration is not identity.
A brand identity should not simply reflect what you like looking at. It should reflect the heart of your business, the people you want to reach and the way you want your work to be experienced. There is a difference between asking, What do I want my brand to look like? and asking, What do I want my brand to communicate?
The second question takes you somewhere much deeper. Your values, personality, perspective, audience and direction all begin to shape the visual language of your brand. When you understand what needs to be communicated first, the design decisions become much more intentional.
002 | YOUR BRAND NEEDS A POINT OF VIEW.
One of the things that can make a brand feel disconnected is trying too hard to be universally appealing. You want everyone to like it, so everything becomes safe. The language becomes broad, the colours become familiar and the imagery could belong to almost anyone.
Nothing feels wrong, but nothing feels particularly yours either.
A strong brand identity does not need to appeal to everyone. It needs to feel recognisable to the people it is meant for. Your point of view might come through in the way you speak about your work, the things you choose to focus on, the way you care for your clients or even the things you choose not to offer.
These details matter because your brand is not simply a visual wrapper around your business. It is part of how people begin to understand what it feels like to work with you.
Clarity creates connection. When you know what you stand for, you no longer need to borrow someone else’s aesthetic to communicate it.
003 | LET YOUR PERSONALITY SHAPE THE VISUAL IDENTITY.
Your brand does not have to be a literal representation of your personality. If you are calm, it does not mean your entire brand needs to be beige. If you are warm, it does not mean every page needs handwritten typography. And if you work in wellness, your brand does not automatically need leaves, natural textures and earthy colours.
These things can be beautiful, but they are not the meaning behind the brand.
The more thoughtful question is, How can the visual identity communicate the feeling and character behind this business? Perhaps that means restraint. Perhaps it means warmth through typography rather than colour. Perhaps it means generous space, considered imagery and a quieter visual rhythm.
Or perhaps your brand needs something unexpected because your personality is not as predictable as the category you work within.
This is where design becomes more interesting. You are no longer choosing elements simply because they are beautiful. You are choosing them because they belong. And when every element has a reason for being there, the whole identity begins to feel more cohesive, more natural and more like you.
004 | BEAUTIFUL DOES NOT ALWAYS MEAN ALIGNED.
This is one of the hardest things to recognise when you are building your own brand. You can genuinely love a design and still know that it is not right for your business.
You may have spent months collecting inspiration. You know exactly what you like and you have a clear visual taste. But when all those beautiful pieces come together, the brand still does not communicate the depth of the work behind it.
That is because good branding is not about making every individual element beautiful. It is about creating a whole that makes sense. The logo needs to sit comfortably alongside the typography. The colours need to support the feeling you want to create. The imagery needs to feel connected to the message. The website needs to carry the same visual language.
And underneath all of it, there needs to be a clear idea.
Without that foundation, it is easy to keep adding. Another font, another colour, another template, another version of the logo. More choices rarely create more clarity.
Sometimes the most valuable thing you can do is remove what does not belong. Choose clarity over noise.
005 | GIVE YOUR BRAND ROOM TO BECOME.
Perhaps the reason your brand does not feel like you anymore is simply because you are not the same person who created it.
Your business has grown. Your confidence has changed. Your offers have evolved. You understand your clients differently. You have discovered what you want to be known for. You have probably let go of things too.
And that is a good thing.
Your brand is allowed to change with you. There is no need to hold onto an identity simply because it was right at the beginning. Equally, there is no need to completely reinvent yourself every time you enter a new season.
Sometimes the work is not about becoming someone new. It is about returning to what was true all along.
Finding the parts of your business that still feel meaningful. Understanding what has changed. Letting go of what no longer fits. And creating an identity that reflects where you are now.
That is what makes a brand feel honest. Not perfection, not following every new design trend and not trying to look like the brands you admire. Just a clearer understanding of who you are and what you want your business to say.
A brand identity that feels like you does not happen by accident. It comes from taking the time to understand the business beneath the visuals, from your message and values to your audience, personality and direction. Then allowing those things to shape the design.
This is why I believe strategy should come before aesthetics.
When the foundation is clear, the visual decisions become quieter. There is less second guessing, less comparing and less trying to make everything fit. And more confidence in choosing what feels true.
At Olumis Studio, I work with purpose-led founders, creatives, wellness practitioners and values-driven businesses who want their brand to feel like an honest reflection of their work. Not simply something beautiful to look at, but something considered, cohesive and aligned with who they are becoming.
Because your brand does not need to look like everyone else’s.
It needs to feel like you.
And sometimes, creating that feeling begins with giving yourself enough space to listen.
If you feel like your brand has outgrown where your business is now, I’d love to hear from you. We can start by talking about where you are, what no longer feels right and what you want your brand to become.
